KAWS is a contemporary artist born in 1974 in New Jersey, USA, whose real name is Brian Donnelly. He is known for his pop style, influenced by graffiti and animation. His best-known work is the character 'Companion', whose eyes are marked with an X.
His biography is as follows
Early 1990s: started doing graffiti in New York.
1993-1996: Studied illustration at the School of Visual Arts.
1996-2000: worked for animation studios such as Disney and MTV.
Early 2000s: created 'Companion' and exhibited worldwide.
2008-present: works for the gallery run by Emmanuel Perrotin, where he has numerous collaborations and projects.
KAWS is also popular in Japan, where his collaborations with UNIQLO and Sesame Street, as well as his giant sculptures at the foot of Mt Fuji, have made headlines.
His work is colourful, iconic and innovative in its production.
