Kaii Higashiyama is regarded as one of the leading national landscape painters of the Showa period. He opened his eyes as a landscape painter after the repeated deaths of his relatives and the harsh experiences of war, and left behind many masterpieces.
Many of his works, such as Afterglow, painted immediately after the war, and The Road, which evokes the dawn of a new era, are close to the hearts of the people who have overcome hard times, and his fantastic paintings of warm, nostalgic landscapes have soothed and attracted many people.
Kaii Higashiyama is also known as the Master of Blue because of his many works using the colour blue. He is also known as a writer and has produced many collections of paintings, such as My Pilgrimage to the Mountains and Rivers and Dialogue with Landscape. These are valuable sources of information on how Kaii dealt with his artworks.
Kaii was also known for his close friendship with the great writer Kawabata Yasunari, with whom he wrote dozens of letters back and forth.
