Higashiyama Kaii (July 8, 1908 - May 6, 1999) was a Japanese painter, printmaker, and writer. He was one of the leading Japanese painters of the Showa period and is considered a national artist in the field of landscape painting. He is a recipient of the Order of Cultural Merit. Honorary citizen of Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture. Studied Japanese painting at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (now Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music). Studied under Yuki Soumei. After graduating from the school in 1931, he studied at the University of Berlin (now Humboldt University) in Germany in 1933. In 1940, he married Sumi, daughter of Japanese painter Kotora Kawasaki. In the same year, he exhibited his work "Nagi," which was based on the scenery of the Tanezashi Coast (eastern part of Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture) and the horses there during a sketching trip to the Tohoku region, at an art exhibition celebrating the 2600th anniversary of the founding of Japan. There are about 17 works that seem to be based on Tanezashi during his lifetime, and horses also became a motif in Higashiyama's works.
