Pablo Picasso
(Western style painter)
Tete de Femme Eau-forte janvier 1905 is one of Picasso's etchings made when he was 20 years old. It depicts Picasso's love affair with Madeleine, a model he met in Paris, and softly depicts her face. This work is considered one of Picasso's masterpieces among his early etchings and demonstrates his artistic talent and sensitivity.
1905, etching; 121 x 90 mm; 4 x 3 1/2 in, wide margins; limited edition of 250 copies; printed in the same edition as the original. Printed by Louis Faure, Paris. Published by Vollard, Paris. From Saltimbanques. This early etching is very good with strong contrast, no signs of wear, dark, rich ink impressions.
The first series of etchings from 1905, which coincides with the Rose Period (or Circus Period) of Picasso's painting, are generally known as the Saltimbanques Suite and were produced early in his career, when he was only 24, and are candid representations of acrobats and gypsies' lives and private moments Many of the pieces are in the collection. Picasso frequented the Cirque Medrano in Montmartre, Paris, close to his studio. As a young artist, he was attracted to the bohemian lifestyle of the circus people, their freedom of expression and their de-familiarised subculture.
